Definition
Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) causes respiratory tract and lung infections. It is a common virus, and most children have been infected by the age of 2. In otherwise healthy individuals, infection typically causes self-limiting symptoms similar to the common cold. In the elderly and in those with weak immune systems, RSV can cause severe infections.
