Hyperthyroidism

Definition

In hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid), the thyroid gland (found in the front of the neck) produces too much of the hormone thyroxine. The excess thyroxine can accelerate the body's metabolism, causing weight loss, sweating, a rapid or irregular heartbeat, and nervousness / irritability. Treatment may include medication, radioiodine, and surgery.
