Heart Murmur

Definition

Heart murmurs are extra or unusual sounds - such as "swishing" or "whooshing" - caused by turbulent blood flow around the heart. The sounds can be heard using a stethoscope. Murmurs can be present at birth, or may develop later. Many murmurs are harmless and do not need any treatment. Others need follow-up and treatment of the underlying cause.
