Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)

Gastroeosophageal reflux disease (GERD) affects the lower esophageal sphincter. In GERD, acid flows back across the sphincter from the stomach and irritates the lining of the esophagus, causing inflammation and heartburn. Most people can manage the symptoms through diet and lifestyle changes. For some, medication and occasional surgery is needed.
