Definition
A food allergy means that the body's immune system overreacts to a certain food, for example, milk, eggs, nuts. Reactions vary from mild to severe, sometimes causing a life-threatening reaction called anaphylaxis. Management includes avoidance of the triggering foods. Many people with food allergies carry an epinephrine autoinjector to prevent a severe reaction.
