Folic Acid Deficiency Anemia

Definition

Folic acid deficiency means that the body does not have enough of the B vitamin folic acid (or folate). Folic acid is needed to make red blood cells. Without folic acid, there aren't enough red blood cells, and anemia occurs. There are a number of different causes of folic acid deficiency anemia. Management includes vitamin replacement as well as treatment of the underlying cause.
