The epiglottis is a piece of cartilage that sits on top of the windpipe, or trachea. Epiglottitis is a serious condition where the epiglottis swells, obstructing the flow of air into the lungs. Causes include infections, a direct injury to the throat, and burns from drinking hot liquids. It can occur at any age and needs immediate medical attention.
