Diabetes

Definition

Diabetes is a problem where glucose (sugar) levels in the blood are higher than normal. In type 1 diabetes, the body cannot make the hormone insulin, which means that glucose cannot enter the cells to release the energy the body needs. Type 1 diabetes is the most common form in children and young adults, and requires treatment with replacement insulin.

In type 2 diabetes, the body cannot use the hormone insulin properly or does not produce enough insulin. This means that glucose cannot enter the cells to release the energy the body needs. Management includes a healthy lifestyle, and sometimes diabetes medication and insulin.
