Definition
The meninges are layers of tissue that protect the brain and spinal cord. Meningitis happens when these layers become inflamed due to a bacterial or viral infection. In aseptic meningitis, the inflammation is most likely caused by a virus, not bacteria. Symptoms include headache, fever, nausea and vomiting, sensitivity to light, and tiredness.
