Definition
Appendicitis is painful swelling of the appendix, a small tube attached to the large intestine. It typically presents with abdominal pain, starting in the center and moving to the right side. Treatment is usually surgical removal - appendectomy. The appendix appears not to have any purpose, so removing it does not cause any long-term problems.
