Background

We are a medical communications company serving the needs of the pharmaceutical industry as they develop and market their products. We’re looking for a Director of Design who is creative, curious, and detail-oriented. You need to have a keen eye for color, and structure, a passion for typesetting and know how to communicate your ideas visually. Reporting to the Creative Director, you will take strategic direction and create original design solutions with the team. You will be responsible to motivate the team to deliver smart, original and engaging designs that solve your client’s problems in fresh and new ways.

 

Essential Functions

  • Is very proficient in Adobe Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign), and/or digital formats like Figma for assigned projects, paying strict attention to details of copy and art;
  • Monitors work and progress by supervising the work of junior designers and provides support as needed;
  • Develops goals with each direct report and conducts performance reviews and regular 1:1s to provide coaching, support career plans, and provide learning opportunities;
  • Fosters an environment of diversity and inclusion on the team;
  • Recognizes people's accomplishments and best efforts;
  • Review all materials for consistency in layout guidelines and all branding elements; take a proactive approach when planning to meet client objectives and deadlines;
  • Reviews and guides all solutions, ineffectively getting messages across in print and electronic media through the use of colour, type, imagery and format;
  • Maintains awareness of budget requirements and limits and alerts client service leads in advance when work exceeds the budget and obtains appropriate approvals to follow through;
  • Able to defend strengths of existing concepts while remaining open to input and further explorations;
  • Solid understanding of client’s marketplace and can evaluate work in light of current marketing environment;
  • Works with internal team to evaluate and synthesize data from various clinical studies, presentations, and published papers; and looks for graphic opportunities to visualize data clearly and effectively;
  • Anticipates obstacles, challenges, and opportunities when developing design plans;
  • Work with developers to ensure proper implementation within a web environment and to ensure consistency and integrity of the creative vision;
  • Participates in client presentations, able to articulate a strong rationale for design;
  • Ensure aesthetics are aligned with usability, accessibility, and web standards;
  • Oversees the design and development of presentations; clearly and effectively describes visual concepts to key stakeholders;
  • Design original pieces, including illustrations and infographics, and generate ideas to portray concepts and advertise products/services at high-quality standards;
  • Solid understanding of market trends and marketing briefs;
  • Understand and learn new technology that impacts the development of interactive assets, as an industry leader ;
  • Oversees the design and production of logos and design systems;
  • Works across both digital and traditional channels.
  • Works closely with other creatives and across agency disciplines.

Candidate Experience and Requirements

Skills & Knowledge

  • Knowledge and application of Adobe Suite, Sketch, Abstract and other relevant design programs
  • Strong attention to detail and aesthetic skills with the ability to combine various colors, fonts and layouts
  • Computer proficiency; solid knowledge of word text programs
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Established presentation skills
  • Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills
  • Ability to work well within a team setting
  • Exhibits sound judgment and decisive problem-solving ability
  • Ability to build client rapport and trust

 

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in digital design, graphic design, graphic communications, visual arts, or related field

 

Experience

  • 5+  years of related experience in an agency setting
  • Portfolio of completed design projects preferred
